Oral history interview with Lloyd C. Fair, 1984 February 24.

Interview with Lloyd C. Fair concerning his experiences as supervisor and buyer for Duke & Ayres Company in Denton, Texas. Floyd Specht, also of Duke & Ayres Company and interviewed for the Business Oral History Project (see OHB 81), sits-in and shares his views as well. Fair discusses his family background, farming near Weatherford, Texas, his experiences during the Depression in Weatherford, his employment with Duke & Ayres in 1941, employee rules and regulations, ownership changes, the merchandise sold in stores, and personnel practices. He also talks about his employment with Duke & Ayres variety store in Athens, Texas in 1945, the changes in the business after World War II, the difficulties obtaining popular products in quantity, the company's failure to grow after World War II, his employment at a new store in Lancaster, Texas in 1959, and his promotion to and experiences as supervisor of stores. Fair comments on his transfer to Dallas as buyer for stores in 1966, the problems as a buyer for a variety store chain, management changes, First Southwest's purchase of Duke & Ayres in 1972, the management's cutback in operations in 1982, and the company's cessation of operations in 1983.
